The PRICELESS/ UNICEF project inception meeting on 22 May 2025 in Windhoek
The PRICELESS/ UNICEF project to assess the legal, administrative, and economic feasibility of obesity prevention policies for children and adolescents in Namibia was launched with an inception meeting on 22 May 2025 in Windhoek. The day began at the UN House and continued at the Ministry of Health and Social Services. The PRICELESS team: Dr Chengetai Dare, Darshen Naidoo, Dr Evelyn Thsehla, and Dr Sameera Mahomedy led the discussions. Valuable contributions were gathered from a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including government officials, civil society, and NGOs, setting a strong collaborative foundation for the project.

Global Diet and Activity Research (GDAR) Network Spaces Project was held on the 21st May 2025
The third and final stakeholder consultation for the Global Diet and Activity Research (GDAR) Network Spaces Project was held on the 21st May 2025. The research project focused on the complex interplay between urbanisation, climate change, and unhealthy commodities in driving non-communicable diseases in cities in the Global South. The discussions were led by the PRICELESS team: Darshen Naidoo, Bontle Mamabolo, Yolanda Chekera-Radu, and Prof Sue Goldstein. The consultation explored local-level policy responses and corporate political activity, emphasising the need for integrated, context-sensitive strategies in low- and middle-income countries to address these overlapping public health challenges.

Behind Closed Doors: Stopping the Capture of NEDLAC,” on the 25 June 2025
PRICELESS and SAAPA SA hosted a dynamic workshop titled “Behind Closed Doors: Stopping the Capture of NEDLAC,” on the 25 June 2025. The workshop disseminated study findings which highlighted industry interference in public health policymaking, specifically alcohol policy and sugary beverage tax policies. The session featured presentations by Prof Sue Goldstein; Darshen Naidoo and Pfumelani Cheryl Siwela . The presentations were followed by discussions led by Aadielah Maker Diedericks and a closing talk by Prof Lekan Ayo-Yusuf as the NEDLAC processes relate to tobacco legislation. Chaired by Yolanda Chekera-Radu, the workshop fostered meaningful engagement on ensuring transparent, accountable, and health-centred policymaking.

Health Benefits Package Design on the 27 May 2025
PRICELESS SA organized a stakeholder engagement meeting on Health Benefits Package Design on the 27 May 2025, as part of the NIHR funded Health Financing ACT Project. The purpose of the meeting was to share PRICELESS SA’s ongoing research on methodologies for health benefits package design with stakeholders while building strategic partnerships that promotes health financing and universal health coverage research in South Africa. The meeting was attended by some of the key stakeholders relevant to the NHI, including participants from the National Department of Health, Council for Medical Schemes, South African Medical Research Council and independent consultants as well as researchers working on health financing and benefits package design

Who we are
The SAMRC/Wits Centre for Health Economics and Decision Science (PRICELESS SA) is an Extramural Unit of the SAMRC. We are a research-to-policy unit that provides evidence, methodologies and tools for effective decision-making in health. We are based at the School of Public Health in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand.
